Avie unaware of the fun 'we' think she is going to have.
This event was put on by City Bark in Parker. Proceeds went to RMLR and Helping Hands (a group dedicated to preventing economic euthanasia). It was a great event that included swimming for the dogs, beer, wine, and tacos for the humans.

Now here is what we envisioned. Avie not being able to contain her excitement and running in to sniff and play with all of the wonderful doggies. We then envisioned her spotting the pool out of the corner of her eye, and with complete and utter excitement would take a flying leap, belly flop right in! Uh...no! We weren't even close. She stayed pretty clear of all the dogs, well....except for the one that decided to hump her. Ha! Poor girl. I tried hard to hide my laughter. The only interest she had was collecting all the balls from the shallow end of the pool, and bringing them over to us. She didn't even care when we threw them in the pool hoping she'd jump in after them. Oh wait...she did jump in, once. That's later.

WAHOOOOO! Now this dog on the other hand, having a blast
!
Here is where Avie's world was completely turned upside down! See the yellow ball at the back end of the pool? And see the little bit of yellow/tan color below it (or next to it)?
Maybe this will help....
Now that is not a face of a dog enjoying the water. If you've ever seen a dog jump in the water, they usually do almost a belly flop and keep their head above water. Avie hasn't figured this out. And she certainly hasn't figured out that she has webbed paws made for swimming. She really panics when she realizes there is nothing underneath her feet.
She doesn't even realize she is swimming. Her focus is getting to where she can feel the floor beneath her paws.
Back to collecting balls without getting in the water.
Remember that party you went to that no matter how pretty you looked you just didn't seem to fit in, and you were the only one wearing a red halter.....
I'm not sure why we thought Avie was going to have a blast at this event. As you can see, all the other dogs were loving it!
Avie on the other hand really doesn't like being enclosed with a lot of dogs. We already knew this and is why we prefer having a dog-sitter rather than board her. The first time I took her to a "Doggie Day Care", I watched her for a good 20 minutes and she stood in the corner trembling. Not a reassuring site for my husband and I. I finally went back to where she was and she came running toward me, and then got bit on the ear by another dog. That certainly didn't help the situation. I tend to chuckle at what others call "princess dogs", maybe our dog is more of a princess than we think (or would rather admit). ;)
We plan on working with her on the swimming thing. We need to go some place where my husband can get in the water with her. I really think this would help. Yes...this is when your four legged furry friend becomes more than just a dog, but truly becomes your kid.
That's okay Avie girl. You're are unique...you must take after me. :)
A few videos from the evening.
Right before this video, my husband assisted her by putting her in the pool at the deep end hoping she would swim. Well....she swam, but to the side of the pool desperately wanting to get out. My husband finally had to help her out.
She's got the retrieving down.
